The Bazaar was bought in February 1966 by Gay B. Sullivan as an alteration business located on Guadalupe known as "The Drag" right across from the University of Texas. Later that summer she started making custom bikini swimsuits (you could not find bikinis in Austin back then!) custom leather sandals and clothing along with the alterations. FARRAH FAWCETT was one of her earlier clients when Farrah attended the University of Texas in Austin.

Gay then started buying new goods such as swimsuits, clothing and lingerie. The Rocky Horror Picture Show started The Bazaar in the costuming business. She gave Tim Curry the corset and stockings he wore for the 1st anniversary celebration for the movie held at the Paramount theater in 1976. The University of Texas Theater Dept. approached her to sell theatrical makeup, so that's how we got into the makeup business. So, naturally selling wigs followed.

In 1985, Gay opened a new location on E. Riverside Dr. while still operating the Drag location. Due to high rents on The Drag, that location was closed in 1996 and and everything moved over to the Riverside location. However, we just closed the Riverside location at the end of 2020. In 2011, Gay opened another location in Wimberley, Texas that is open every day of the week (except some of the major holidays).

Nowadays Gay, Gay's daughter-Gail Fisher and her wonderful and experienced employees run the day to day operations of the business and Gay is still the matriarch of The Bazaar. Her wisdom and experience have made what The Bazaar is today - a unique and exciting shopping institution in Wimberley.
